Advocate Lilla Crouse is an adjunct professor in the Department of Public Law, appointed until 30 October 2017.
Lilla is an admitted advocate. She completed her pupillage in 1992. She is currently employed with Legal Aid South Africa as a senior litigator for the Eastern Cape. One of her functions is to be involved in public interest litigation. She is the recipient of Legal Aid South Africa's Lawyer of the Year for 2014. She regularly appears in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court. Many of these cases are reported. She has held acting appointments as a Judge of the High Court in the Eastern Cape and in Gauteng since 2007. One of her judgments which is a reported judgment, was referred to with approval, in a SCA judgment and is also discussed in a major textbook and the faculty's in-house journal, Obiter.
Lilla has a passion for mentoring and training young lawyers. She is involved on an ongoing basis in work that empowers children, women, persons addicted to drugs and the poor generally. She wants to see a better education system in South Africa and to this end is involved with FEDSAS, a school governing body organisation. She is also a member of the Education Advisory Council of the Eastern Cape's MEC for Education. Lilla is committed to the rule of law and regards it as the cornerstone of our democracy which must be protected above all.
Lilla has been married to Carl for some 30 years. They have two adult children who reside in the Western Cape.
